Teaching Responsible Decision-Making (Workshop)

Making good choices, weighing options, considering consequences and others, acting ethically, is a skill students build, not something they simply have or lack. Teaching responsible decision-making gives students a framework they can use in the classroom and well beyond it.

Key takeaway

Responsible decision-making, weighing options, considering consequences and others, and acting ethically, is a teachable skill that serves students in the classroom and throughout life.

Why it works

Responsible decision-making, a CASEL competency, involves making constructive choices about behavior and interactions based on consequences, ethics, and the wellbeing of self and others. Research links it to better behavior and outcomes, and it can be taught: giving students a decision-making framework, practicing it on real situations, and reflecting on choices. It helps students move from impulsive to considered choices.

The research: CASEL framework; research on decision-making skills.

The core activity: teach a decision-making framework

Teachers leave with a framework to teach, model, and practice on real choices.

Teach the reasoning, not just the ruleRules cannot cover every situation. Teach students a framework for weighing options, consequences, and others, and they can reason through choices themselves.

    Facilitator notes

Compliance is not decision-makingOnly teaching rules leaves students unable to reason through the situations no rule covers. Teach a decision-making framework and practice it.

    Common questions

    Can you really teach decision-making?
Yes. Giving students a framework (stop, consider options and consequences, think of others, choose, reflect) and practicing it on real situations builds the skill.
How is this different from just following rules?
Rules tell students what to do; decision-making teaches them to reason through choices themselves, including the many situations no rule covers. It builds judgment, not just compliance.
    Where does it fit?
In conflicts, choices, and dilemmas that arise naturally, and in content (characters' decisions, historical choices, ethical questions). Make the reasoning explicit.
