Why it works
Sports medicine and athletic training is a health-science career pathway that applies anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, and injury science to the prevention, assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of physical injuries, especially in sport and activity. It engages students through a familiar interest (sports and the body) while teaching rigorous science and genuine health-care knowledge and skills, injury prevention and care, the musculoskeletal system, taping and first aid, rehabilitation principles, and professionalism, toward careers in athletic training, physical therapy, medicine, fitness, and related fields. Strong programs ground the hands-on skills and sports connection in real anatomical and physiological science, treating it as the rigorous health-science pathway it is, not just sports enthusiasm.

The core activity: ground sports interest in real science
Teachers leave grounding the sports hook in rigorous anatomy and skills.
- Pick a sports medicine or athletic training topic.
- Teach the underlying science (anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, injury).
- Build hands-on health-care skills (prevention, assessment, care, taping, rehab principles) with professionalism.
- Connect to the many health and fitness careers.
Facilitator notes
- Teach the underlying science (anatomy, physiology, injury).
- Build hands-on health-care skills, and emphasize professionalism.
- Connect to careers.
Adapt it
- Middle school: body basics, injury, exploration.
- High school: anatomy, physiology, injury care, professionalism, careers.
- All settings: rigorous science, hands-on skills, careers.
